Brenda Berman Weinstein

With profound sadness and endless gratitude, we announce the passing of Brenda Berman Weinstein, who passed away on August 10th, 2026 in Birmingham, Alabama, following a brain cancer diagnosis in 2021. While she successfully kicked the cancer to the curb, the years that followed brought a series of health challenges that she fought as she approached every challenge in life: with quiet dignity, stubborn determination, and remarkable grace, refusing to give in a moment before her body absolutely demanded.

Born in Birmingham on December 4, 1949, Brenda was raised by her loving parents, Fred and Sylvia Berman, alongside her sister, Jeri. She graduated from Shades Valley High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Georgia and a Masters in Education from Georgia State University.

After college, she moved to Atlanta, where she taught school and met Steve Weinstein. Though she was initially unmoved by his advances, Steve's persistence paid off, and they married in 1977. Brenda and Steve moved to Birmingham in 1980 to help run her family’s business, Bermco Aluminum, and to raise their family in the community in which she was raised.Together they built a life filled with love, family, laughter, friendship, and countless wonderful memories. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary next year.

Nothing mattered more to Brenda than the people she loved. She was a devoted wife and, miraculously, only an occasional eye roller to Steve; a deeply proud grandmother and spoiler in chief to grandchildren, Emilia & Alexa Ostroff; lifelong best friend and sparring partner to sister Jeri; and a loving friend, trusted confidante, and consummate hostess to a wide circle of cherished family members and lifelong friends. Above all, she was lead cheerleader, chief advisor, bodyguard, and personal shopper for her children, Jared Weinstein (Whitney Wright and Whitney’s daughter, Vivian) and Marla Ostroff (Steve). She taught them to live fully, dream big, and love unconditionally.

Brenda had a gift for bringing people together and making every occasion feel special. Whether hosting the high holidays, planning a celebration big or small, traveling with friends and family, or simply opening her home to others, she created connection, joy, and memories that will last forever. She loved flowers, the color pink, fashion, Alabama football, Whitney Houston, Saks triple points, sushi, chocolate, and spy novels. But most of all, she loved being surrounded by the people she cared about. Her family and friends will remember her warmth, loyalty, strength, style, and generosity of spirit. They will remember her laughter, her advice, her horrible poker face, her unwavering support, and the way she made everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved.

Mom, thank you for giving us both roots and wings. Thank you for teaching us everyday through your actions how to always show up for the people we love. Thank you for every holiday, every family tradition, every piece of advice, every celebration, and every moment you made special simply by being there. We will miss you beyond measure, love you always, and strive every day to make you proud… even though we know you would love us regardless.

Brenda’s memorial service and celebration of life will be held at noon on Thursday, August 13th, at Temple Beth El 179 Highland Ave S., Birmingham, AL 32505. There will be a Meal of Condolence immediately following. Mourners are encouraged to wear a pop of pink in her honor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Brenda’s honor be made to the Chabad of Alabama or Magic Moments.
