Carl A. Dimick, of Cropwell, Alabama died at St. Vincent East on Friday, February 25, 2022, where he was surrounded by his loving family during his brief illness and passing. He was 81. Carl was born in Birmingham on February 5, 1941, to Jennie Rose Coplon Dimick and Daniel Baker Dimick, Jr. He lived much of his life in Birmingham and graduated high school from Birmingham University School. Carl received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Alabama and his Master’s Degree in Education from University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Carl was a long-time, dedicated educator for the Birmingham City School System. He taught early in his career at the elementary school level prior to finding his passion teaching history and being the academic team coach at West End High School. Carl retired from his position at West End after 33 years of teaching. In addition to sharing his love of history with those around him, Carl loved to grow his own vegetables and plant fruit trees on his property. When weather or circumstances did not allow him to garden, Carl was an enthusiastic supporter of UAB athletics, most especially his beloved UAB Football Team. When not cheering on the Blazers, he frequently posted on BlazerTalk as another way to express his support and demonstrate his excitement for UAB Athletics. Carl also frequently submitted editorial opinions to the local newspapers as another way to continue to engage in the community and current events.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Jennie Rose, and Daniel Baker Dimick, Jr., a daughter, Jennie Dimick Freeze, and his brother, Dr. Alan Dimick. He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Patricia Bostick Dimick; six children, Daniel Baker Dimick IV (Jean), Birmingham, AL, Carla Dimick Meyer (Rod), Munster, IN, Stephen Dimick Schulenberg (Gretchen), Fishers, IN, Robert Lewis Slaughter, Jr. (Page), Collierville, TN, Gregory Steven Slaughter (Liz), Pell City, AL., and Cynthia Lynn Slaughter, Nashville, TN. Carl, also lovingly known as “Papa Carl and Pap C,” is survived by his 13 grandchildren: Blake Dimick (Melanie), Philip Dimick, Harrison Dimick, Whitney McCarthy (Matt), Tiffany Lawton (Nathan), Raleigh Pedro (Luis), Connor Meyer, Gavin Schulenberg, Katelyn Kidd (Andrew), Trey Slaughter, Sarah Beth Slaughter, Winston Slaughter, and Tripp Chapman. Carl also had six great-grandchildren: Braxton Powell, Sarah McCarthy, Charlotte Lawton, Adeline Lawton, Giselle Pedro, and Hadley Kidd. Carl is also survived by one niece, Susan Dimick Green (Marvin), two nephews, Dr. Robert (Bob) Dimick (Sandy), and Dr. Richard Dimick (Karen), and one sister-in-law, Ida Martha Dimick. Carl’s eternally positive attitude and warm personality will be dearly missed but the life lessons he taught those around him, especially his family will endure forever.
Visitation will be at Johns-Ridout’s, Elmwood Chapel on Saturday, March 5th from 10 am-11am with a graveside service to immediately follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
