Carl P Franklin

Carl Phillip Franklin passed away on March 31, 2021 at 91 years of age. Born on Thursday, September 26, 1929 in Birminham, AL, he was the second of four children born to Virgil Hood and Pinkey Collum Franklin. After graduating from Ensley High School in 1947, he attended Auburn University and received a co-op position with US Steel. He joined the US Air National Guard in September of 1950, and was moved up to active duty in January of 1952 as a Senior Aircraft Electrical Accessory Repairman with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was Honorably Discharged from the 117th Maintenance Squadron of the US Air Force in September of 1953, returned to Auburn University where he completed his Electrical Engineering degree in 1954, and then began his 33 year career with the Southern District Mines Division of US Steel Corporation. He retired in 1987 as the Superintendent of Maintenance.
Before being called up to active duty he married Eva Eyvonne Lowe of Docena, AL on October 19, 1951. After moving to Birmingham they raised their one child, Bruce.
He was a member of the Birmingham Camellia Society where he won several awards for the beautiful flowers he raised. He also enjoyed raising and training Pigeons to compete in races and belonged to the Heart of Dixie Racing Pigeon Club where he won several trophies for his loft and birds.
He is survived by his wife Eyvonne, son Bruce (Sherrie), and brother Terry.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, April 5, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Elmwood Cemetery.
