
In celebration of the life of Carl August Schaefer, Sr. who was born November 14, 1920 in Powderly, Alabama. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Evangelical Church in Birmingham. A graduate of Jones Valley High School, he served in the Army of the United States in battles and campaigns of Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Philippine Island Defense, and Luzon. During this time he was awarded the Bronze Star and WWII Victory Medal. He was a bookbinder and owner of a successful business, Art Bindery, Inc., where he worked until age 93. He was a long-time resident of Hoover where he was member of the first volunteer Hoover Fire Department. Those who knew Carl, were aware of his strong faith, love for family, work ethic, sense of humor, and his enjoyment of the games of golf and football. He was so appreciative of the love and care he received from his devoted wife. He will be greatly missed by all. Survived by his loving wife of 62 years Gloria Ann Steele Schaefer; sister-in-law’s Omadee Bailey, Carolyn Kessler Schaefer, and Joanna Schaefer; children Gretchen McDaniel (Randall), Carl Schaefer, Jr. (Shari), Carol Milster (Danny), and Dale Schaefer (Gladys); fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces as well as great-nephews and nieces. Carl is preceded in death by his father, Herbert Henry Schaefer, and mother, Anna Frieda Schaefer; his sister Mildred Hueske (Vernon) and brothers, Herbert (Dee), John, and Rudy; and great grandson, Austin Dean Ezell. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to Center Point Independent Church (1269 Huffman Road, Birmingham, AL 35215). There will be a service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
