
HOPSON, CHARLES ALVIN Charles A. Hopson, age 70, of Birmingham, died on August 11, 2011. Mr. Hopson, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Alvin H. Hopson of Huntsville, AL, was born in Louisville, KY and grew up in Huntsville, AL. He earned degrees from Samford University and Athens State University and retired from The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2006. He is survived by his wife, Jane Mathis-Hopson; three children: a daughter, Lydia Hopson Keadle (Joe); two sons, Holland Garth Hopson (Laura) and Christopher Howell Holcombe (Jenna); and four grandchildren: Lia Grace Keadle, Julia Madison Keadle, August Edison Hopson, and Ashtyn Starr Holcombe. His interests included travel to study cathedrals, labyrinths, and stone circles. He and his wife Jane visited sacred sites in America, Europe, and the British Isles. He studied texts from many sacred and religious traditions with a particular interest in early Christian writings. He valued the role of father and good householder. He was a student of the Gurdjieff Work for over 30 years, and served on the Council of the Red Mountain Study Group. The funeral service was held August 15 at The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi, with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, AL.
