Charles "Chuck" Myrin Nelson, 77, of Springville, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at St. Vincent's East Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota on December 13, 1946 to the now deceased Clayton E.J. Nelson and Agnes Myrin Nelson. He is also preceded in death by his brother Paul C. Nelson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Dortha C. Nelson; son David C. Nelson, his wife Emma, and stepson Alvin Quan of Marietta, Georgia; sister Myrna Lindstrum of Vancouver, Canada; sister Ramona Nelson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister-in-law Phyllis Adams; brother-in-law Larry Adams; brother-in-law John Coleman; sister-in-law Ginger Letson-Coleman; brother-in-law Walter Coleman, Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Chuck graduated from Albert Lea High School and then briefly entered the University of Minnesota before leaving to join the U.S. Air Force. He later graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, with an Aircraft A&P license. He then moved to Birmingham, Alabama to work at Bill Woods Aircraft, followed by several other aircraft fixed-base operations in Birmingham for 36 years.
Chuck not only worked on aircraft but was also a skilled pilot. He obtained his private pilot license while in high school and later obtained a commercial pilot license, instrument rating, certified flight instructor rating, and rotorcraft rating. He held multiple commercial pilot positions, including crop dusting and traffic watch. He was also an Amateur Radio "HAM" operator since high school.
He and his wife built their own home in the countryside and enjoyed observing wildlife. He loved his family and making other people laugh through his lighthearted remarks. He will be missed by many.
A visitation service will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel, located at 1500 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, July 15, 2024, at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. Following the service, burial will be at New Lebanon Baptist Church, located at 169 New Lebanon Rd, Springville, AL 35146.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the American Heart Association.
