Charles Delbert Nelson, born April 9, 1932, passed peacefully in his sleep in the morning of February 2, 2017. He was predeceased by his late parents, Charles Alexander Nelson and Maurine Belk Nelson as well as his infant son, Charles Christian Nelson.
During his life, he served our country as an Airborne Paratrooper with the 187th Airborne Division, with a deployment to Japan. He was a life-long member and Major Coordinator of the John Birch Society as well as the National Rifle Association. His various endeavors included a restaurant, bookstore, gas station, and a vending company all in East Lake, showing his ambitious spirit and talents across all boards. He retired from Sears and Roebucks' automotive department in 1993.
However more than his resume, he was a lover of man. He delighted more than anything in the lending of hands to those in need. Never would he deny one in which he could assist. He was a deacon in three separate churches throughout his life, helping those find God in the Fourth Ave Baptist Church, Faith Chapel of Huffman, and Mountain Brook Independent Methodist Church. None would ever be the same without his presence.
In his youth he was a dirt track race car driver. Later, in his leisure he would ride motorcycles in the renowned 'Over the Hill' gang, showing his zest for life and a never ending adventurous spirit. Having studied aeronautical engineering at Alabama Polytechnic University (later to become Auburn University), his love for the Auburn Tigers rivaled that with any other die-hard fan; he watched every game win or lose, season upon season at the edge of his seat.
Anyone that met him was sure to be charmed by his laugh, smile and love he showed to all he encountered. Survived by his son, Charles Grant Nelson (married to Kathy Nelson) and his daughter, Kim Nelson Hamm (married to David Hamm) and his granddaughters, Lauren Michelle Hamm and Ashley Elizabeth Hamm. He will be missed sorely and not a day will go by in which his presence will not be longed for. We shall meet again in Heaven
.
