Born in Birmingham on November 19, 1932, Clarence became a familiar and trusted face to generations of neighbors as the longtime owner and operator of his service station on Clairmont Avenue. Beyond his work, he found joy in the simple rhythms of life—whether he was gliding across a floor while square dancing, tending to his land on his beloved farm equipment, or finding peace at his lake house on Lake Martin.
Clarence was preceded in death by his devoted parents, Charles and Winnie Chapin; his beloved wife of 64 years, Shirley Jean Chapin; his sons, Terry, James, Ralph, and Michael Chapin; and four of his siblings.
His legacy of strength and kindness lives on through those who survive him, his sons, Gary (Cynthia) Chapin, Curtis (Carol) Chapin, and Scott (Anita) Chapin; his brothers: Glenn (June) Chapin and Bobby Chapin; A vast and loving family of numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and his faithful companion, his dog, Baxter.
The family invites friends to join them in honoring Clarence’s life on Monday, March 30, 2026, with Visitation beginning at 1:00 PM at Elmwood Chapel, followed by a Graveside Service at 2:00 PM at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum.
Clarence will be remembered for his steady hands, his devotion to his family, and the quiet joy he found in a sunset over the lake.
