Darrell S. Whitfield, 75, of Hoover, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026. Born on September 4, 1950, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Darrell lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his faith, and his community.
Darrell proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army for 20 years before retiring with honor. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to hard work and discipline through a career with the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. His meticulous nature and strong work ethic were evident in all aspects of his life.
A man of deep faith, Darrell cherished his church community at Unity CME Church in Bessemer, Alabama. He was actively involved in church activities, including assisting with financial responsibilities and Bible studies. In earlier years, he also served as a deacon at another congregation. His contributions reflected his steadfast devotion to both God and those around him.
Darrell had a passion for life that extended beyond work and worship. He was an avid sports enthusiast who loved Alabama Roll Tide football and cheered fervently for the Birmingham Stallions. He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing or playing golf and could often be found engaging in friendly competition over table tennis or pool. Bowling was another pastime he relished. Known for his love of cars, Darrell delighted in trading vehicles and took great pride in maintaining them. He had a great passion for contemporary jazz music.
His sense of style was unmatched—he was particularly fond of quarter-zip sweaters and Kangol hats—and he carried himself with a suave demeanor that left an impression on everyone he met. Though stoic and quiet by nature, Darrell’s kind heart shone through in his actions. He was known for being brutally honest yet deeply giving and loving toward those he cared about.
Family was central to Darrell’s life. He is survived by his devoted life partner Patricia Whitfield; sons Juhari Whitfield (Velencia) and Jabbar Whitfield; grandchildren Christion, Devon, Akira; brother Coulter Hillman (Charlene); sisters Ruthann Jones (Ronald) and Sharon Hillman (Bruce); as well as a host of cousins and extended family members who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents Larry Whitfield and Minnie E. Driver Hillman; sister Deborah Hillman King; and brother Bruce D. Hillman.
Darrell’s memory will live on not only through the love of his family but also through the countless lives he touched with his generosity, honesty, and unwavering dedication to those he held dear.
May those who knew him find comfort in remembering the joy he brought into their lives and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
