David Paul Rumbarger, Sr., age 92, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025. He was surrounded by his family during his final days, leaving behind a legacy of love, support, and resilience.
Born on April 21, 1933, in Dayton, Ohio, Dave was the son of Paul E. and Lucie Rumbarger. He grew up in Ohio, where he developed a strong sense of duty and service that would guide him throughout his life. He graduated Fairmont High School in June of 1951.
In June of 1953, Dave answered the call of his country by enlisting in the United States Armed Forces. He served as a corporal and a medic during the Korean War, demonstrating immense bravery and commitment. His time in the military instilled in him the values of courage, discipline, and compassion; traits he carried into his civilian life.
After returning from military service, Dave married Fey Fraser of Birmingham, AL. They moved to Stillwater, OK where he graduated with an electrical technology associates degree from Oklahoma State University in 1958. The couple settled in Birmingham, Alabama, where he built a fulfilling career in civil engineering and equipment maintenance, owning his own company, Process Systems. He was well-respected in his community and known for his strong work ethic and dedication.
Dave was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Fey, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Together, they raised a beautiful family and created countless cherished memories, camping, fishing and the outdoors. Dave invested time into his children. He made sure all of them could do more than simple maintenance on their cars, he taught them the intricate details of the automobile, and all of them have an appreciation for cars thanks to him. With four children, Dave was a good steward of his money and belongings. Dave did almost all his home repairs and improvements himself—something else he shared with his children.
In addition to his professional achievements and dedication to family, David was a member of Third Presbyterian Church PCA. His church family have been an immeasurable source of support. First, they were there with him in the loss of his wife, and during these last years, they have continued to be a blessing to him. He enjoyed SEC sports, car maintenance and repair, and he could fix most anything mechanical. He was never afraid to push a button.
Dave is survived by his four children: David Rumbarger, Jr. (Donna), Toby Rumbarger (Beth Ann), Lucie Morrisroe (Neil) and Peter Rumbarger (Holley); grandchildren: David Rumbarger III (Marley), Mary Larkin Peebles (Quinn), Kasey Kelleher (Patrick), Kate Thurman (Will), Rachel and Steven Morrisroe, Sarah Fey Brown (Alan), Rebecca Holley and Simon Rumbarger, and Anna Sumner(Jeremy); great grandchildren: Parker Rumbarger, Fraser Brown, Wendy Sumner, and Carter Kelleher. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Fey Fraser.
A celebration of his life will be held at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel 800 Dennison Avenue SW Birmingham, AL 35211 with burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery on Thursday May 29 at 2 pm with visitation prior at 1 pm, where family and friends are invited to remember Dave's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Third Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, AL in Dave’s honor.
David P. Rumbarger, Sr. will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for his family and country. May he rest in peace.
