Don was a graduate of Walker County High School and received his B.A. in Interior Design from Auburn University. He married Sharon Nanette Oakes in 1972. Through the years, he worked for several interior design companies in Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama. Some of the projects he contributed to are the King and Prince Hotel and the St. Simons Island Club in St. Simons, Georgia. In Birmingham, his work can be seen in many commercial buildings and hospitals. His last position was with Abba Contract where he was in the estimating and sales department.
Don was known as an artist in high school. He continued to use his talent in the renderings he created for design clients. He enjoyed fishing and searching for “treasures.” After retiring due to illness, his favorite hobby was caring for his grandchildren two days a week. He also enjoyed attending Church of the Highlands with his family.
Don was loved by all who met him and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We find comfort in knowing that to be absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord and we know that we will see him again.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sharon Nanette Reid; daughter Adrienne Reid Whitehurst and her husband, Jason Whitehurst of Trussville, AL; precious grandchildren – Ashtyn Nanette Whitehurst, James Grayton Whitehurst and Madison Marie Whitehurst; brother James Olen Reid of Cullman, Alabama and other relatives and friends.
Don’s family would like to thank his physician, Dr. Jeremy Smith, for his kind and compassionate care through the years…especially during Don’s last illness over the past two years.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, with visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the First Baptist Church of Trussville WEE Center, 128 North Chalkville Road, Trussville, AL 35173.
