Doris Jean Davis Blunt was born February 1, 1940, in Bullock County, Alabama, the third of eleven children to John W. and Carrie L. Davis. She lived a full life and was known to be feisty and quite vocal.
Doris attended Council Elementary then Western Olin High School where she graduated in 1958. At age fourteen, she accepted Christ and was baptized with the Holy Ghost at Sherman Heights Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Elder B. T. Henry.
In 1959, Doris got her first job at Birmingham Southern College, working in the cafeteria as a bus girl. She worked this job until 1962, and in 1963 decided to go north to Connecticut on a bus with a company called King Employment Agency where she did private housekeeping work.
In 1969 Doris moved with this same employment agency to Saratoga Springs, New York, where she met Randolph Blunt, who made her his bride in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Her sons, Darryl and Randolph "Randy", Jr., were born in Connecticut. She later enrolled in a Nursing School and received an Assistant Nursing Certificate.
Doris returned to Birmingham and became a member of Emanuel Temple Church of God in Christ under the pastorate of Bishop O. L. Meadows. Her family and others enjoyed her southern style cooking, which she delighted in preparing. Her specialty was fried corn and collard greens. She was enrolled with Positive Maturity’s Ensley Senior Citizens Center. When this center was closed, she attended JCCEO St. Joseph Center and relished activities with Ms. Alma Greene and other attendees at both centers.
After a brief illness, Doris departed this life on June 27, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Darryl Alfred and three siblings, Clinton Davis, Evelyn Bernice Kendrick and Janice Ruth Jones. She leaves to cherish many fond memories: a son, Randolph "Randy" Blunt, Jr. (Tamesha), and two granddaughters, Zaynah and Jordyn of Brooklyn, NY; siblings John Davis of FT Worth, TX, Merrill Wright of Queens, NY, Dolores Hinds (Sherwin) of Hartford CT, Marjorie Davis of Brooklyn, NY, Gregory Davis (Jaqueline), Deborah Johnson and Fragilia Gail Coleman (Stanley) of Birmingham; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home and from 10 to 11:30 AM at Emmanuel Temple Church of God in Christ with a Celebration of Doris’ life following at 11:30 AM.
