OBITUARY

Dorothy Hicks Douglas

February 14, 1935November 20, 2021

Mrs. Dorothy Hicks Douglas, was born on February 14, 1935 in Birmingham, AL. She was the youngest girl born to the late Mr. Author and Tinnie Robinson. "Dot", as she was affectionately known, peacefully transitioned to her final resting place on November 20, 2021 at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her five brothers and four sisters.

Dorothy was educated in the Birmingham Public School system and graduated from A.H.Parker High School. She confessed Christ as an early age and lived her life to the fullest with, "J.C" leading her along the way. She was active in each church she became a member of throughout her life. She joyfully sung in the church choirs and served on the usher board.

After high school, Dorothy married and relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. She began a career where she was known for her fast productivity. She proudly purchased a home as a young adult and was happy when her baby brother, Sam, relocated to the area to live with her. Having him close always provided her with extra comfort and protection.

After 20+years, Dorothy was a courageous move and joined her sister in California. There she began her career as a school bus driver. She was loved by students, parents and school personnel and was known for her direct communication. This often made her the "go-to" for advice and problem resolution. After dating for 17 years, Dorothy finally accepted the offer of marriage from her teddy bear, Freddie Douglas. They wed in 1992 and remained life partners until his passing.

After becoming a widow, Dorothy relocated to South Carolina and joined another sister and her family. There she became an active member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Milton Key. While living in Lake Wylie, SC, Dorothy made many friends that loved her as family. Being more than neighbors, she began a loving relationship with her goddaughter, Karen Dudley-Culbreath. Monthly women's group meeting, bus trips to the casino and lunch appointments kept her busy. Oh yes, she really enjoyed visiting the casinos with her white son, Jerry, and his wife Tammy.

In 2017, Dorothy made the decision to return home to the Birmingham area to be closer to her late niece, Madeline Curry. The two were known to "run the streets" together. Dorothy was also excited to tailgate and watch sports with the family of her niece, Yolanda Moss, and her husband Carl. As Dorothy encountered health issues, she was appreciative to have both of them as her caregivers as well. She valued meeting and reacquainting with her many nieces and nephews. Learning about their individual accomplishments made her proud especially those of one of her caretakers, Dr. Lynn.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory; a goddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A public visitation will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 from 10-11:00am in the chapel of Johns Ridout's Elmwood Chapel located at 800 Dennison Ave. SW. Birmingham AL. 35211 with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 11:00am. Burial will follow immediately in Elmwood Cemetery.
