Dorothy Mae Whaley Shields, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on April 1, 1934, Dorothy lived a long, full life marked by kindness, curiosity, creativity, and quiet strength.
Dorothy was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas B. and Laura Mae Whaley, and the cherished granddaughter of Samuel & Jessie Whaley and John & Annie McDonald. She was preceded in death by her brother, James T. Whaley; her infant son, Thomas Lance Shields; and her son-in-law, Henry Martin Hoffmeyer III.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Patsy M. Hoffmeyer; and her loving grandchildren who knew her as Mama Dorothy, Christa Mayfield (Judy Slocum) and Christie Hoffmeyer. Dorothy was a proud and nurturing mother and grandmother who poured her heart into her family and brought warmth and comfort to their lives.
A graduate of Phillips High School, Dorothy dedicated 34 years of her professional life to BellSouth, where she was known for her diligence, intelligence, and grace. She was admired by colleagues and friends alike for her integrity and unwavering dedication.
Dorothy had a love for the arts and crafts, especially crocheting and cross-stitching. She found joy in creating beauty with her hands, and her works were treasured by all who received them. She was patient, accepting, brilliant, and endlessly kind — a true example of inner and outer beauty.
Her legacy is one of love, gentleness, and quiet strength. Dorothy’s spirit will live on in the lives of her family and in the countless memories she leaves behind.
A graveside service and burial will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 12:00 Noon at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, AL.
Dorothy Mae Whaley Shields was deeply loved and will be missed more than words can express.
