Edgar Merle Zimmerman

Edgar Merle Zimmerman age 99, of Helena, Alabama passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024. He was born to Harry and Edith Zimmerman on May 27, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois. Edgar was a graduate of Riverside Academy and after completing his service in the Army Air Corps during WWII, went on to receive a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin. On July 6, 1952, he married the love of his life, Gloria Shapiro Zimmerman.

He and his father started a wholesale diamond import business called H L Zimmerman and Son, which eventually became National Diamond Syndicate, a business he worked at until retiring at age 80. He spent most of his life living in Highland Park, IL and Delray Beach, FL.

His passions included playing golf, playing bridge, and traveling the world. He was also a voracious reader.

Edgar was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Gilbert, and his beloved wife of 53 years, Gloria. He leaves behind his children, Garry (Robin) Zimmerman, Keith (Elisabeth) Zimmerman, Richard (Susan) Zimmerman and Jody (Mark) Robinson.

Grandchildren Nicolas (Anita) Zimmerman, Aaron (Mikayla) Zimmerman, Ariel (Daniel) Dorfman, Kristopher (Arielle) Zimmerman, Gregory (Avery) Zimmerman, Katie (Darrin) Dimond, Kirby (Scott) Manausa, Bill (Melissa) Zimmerman, Jory (Jennifer) Zimmerman, Spencer (Eugene) Becker, Julia (Nate) Zimmerman Sharpe, Rebecca Robinson and Hayden Robinson; Great Grandchildren Elana, Jacob, Hunter, Chance, Ezra, Kadyn, Zyler, Mason, Miles, Emerson, Hayes, Max, Layla, Noah, Gavi, Aella, Zara, and Sadie Grace.

His Memorial Service will be at Temple Emanuel, 2100 Highland Ave South at 11am on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. Shiva is at the home of Mark and Judy Robinson on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 6 to 8 pm.

A celebration of his life will take place in Chicago at the home of Keith and Elisabeth Zimmerman, December 15 from 11am - 3pm.
