Ed was the son of Edwin McCoy Ray and Stella Smith Ray (both deceased).
He attended Jacksonville State University and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Thereafter, he was hired by Radio Corporation of America (RCA) to work for the US Government Air Force Easter Missile Test Range as lead Telemetry Engineer in 1955. He was called one of the original American Missileers.
He was a long-time member of Pell City Kiwanis Club and First United Methodist Church of Pell City.
He was predeceased by his wife, Joy, in 2016. He is survived by his children, Charles Ray, Carlton Ray and Charlotte Covin, many grandchildren and great grandchildren and his sister, Sarah Swindall.
