Jean was pre-deceased by parents, Louie and Daisy Bell Craig Kirchler; sisters: Helen Trice and twin sister, Jessie Kurtts, husband, George Kurtts and former husband, Walter V. Cross, Jr., and granddaughter, Khaleda Neder Assell.
Jean was a graduate of Shades Cahaba High School (Shades Valley) and served as a Navy WAVE during WWII. One of her proudest moments was participating in Honor Flight in 2009, to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. Another special moment in her life was an article in the Birmingham News about her special group of friends from McCoy United Methodist Church who met monthly for over 50 years. They sewed together and fellowshipped together, seeing each other through many trials and life events as they raised their families.
She is survived by daughter, Barbara Cross Assell (John), and sons, Bobby L. Cross, and George E. Kurtts (Sammylie); and by grandchildren: Jennifer Assell Janik (Gary), Mike Assell (Amanda), Hayley Assell England (Aaron), Vanessa Cross Witholt (Ryan), Leslie Cross Shannon (Ken), Preston Cross, Russell Kurtts (Linda), Lisa Kurtts Hamilton (Drew), and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces, Beverly Trice Scarborough, Sandra Hudson, Joyce Hudson, nephew Jim Cross, and several great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to All About Care for their care and devotion to Jean in her final years.
Visitation will be Friday, August 16, at 10:00 am at Johns Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel. Funeral service will begin at 11:00.
