Ernest Rupert Stewart Jr.

Ernest (Ernie) Rupert Stewart, Jr born July 15, 1942 passed away on October 1st, 2019 at his home in Birmingham, Alabama. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest R. Stewart Sr. and Margaret Phillips Stewart. Survivors include his wife, Veronica Loyce Mayfield Stewart; his 4 daughters, Margaret Cynthia Stewart, Caroline Stewart Overcash (Cindy), Brandi Crawford and Shannon Crawford Jellerson (Jeff); his sister, Susan Stewart Earle; his 7 grandchildren and a host of extended family members and friends.

Ernie grew up in Anniston, Alabama and graduated from Anniston High School. He furthered his education at Birmingham Southern College, graduating in 1964. While there he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and served as the President of the North Alabama Conference of Methodist Youth. He later graduated from the LSU School of Banking.

Most of his adult life was spent in Birmingham working in the banking industry. He served primarily at First National Bank (Amsouth) and Central Bank. After moving to Niceville Florida with Vanguard Bank, he decided to purchase and operate a franchise of Tuffco Flooring, remaining in sales until he retired in 2015. Ernie was an avid hunter and loved fishing well into retirement. He was a member of Church of the Highlands, and a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

A memorial service for Ernie will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2019 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Johns-Ridout's Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave Sw, Birmingham, AL 35211.

The family would like to thank the UAB Cardiac Transplant Team for his medical care over the years as well as Southern Care Hospice, who provided amazing care in his final moments. Ernie felt absolutely blessed for the more than 22 years of life he was given through a heart transplant.
