
Etta Dorman Whitlock Etta Dorman Whitlock died Thursday, January 22, 2015, in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the home she shared with her daughter. Born August 30, 1918, she was the daughter of John Pool and Julia Rose Zenia Dorman. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Glenn Taylor Whitlock, sisters and brothers, Mildred Rickles, Audie Mize, I.W. Dorman, and William H. Hall, and son-in law, Dr. Ned Moomaw. She is survived by two daughters, Doris Hixon and husband, Dr. Dan Hixon, of Nashville, Tennessee and Dr. Suzanne Moomaw of Charlottesville, Virginia; three grandchildren, Laney Hixon Hutchings and husband, Todd, of Marietta, Georgia, Julie Hixon of Brooklyn, New York, and Will Moomaw of Charlottesville, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Haley Hutchings and Jake Hutchings of Marietta, Georgia; two sisters, Mina Rickles of Montgomery and Joyce Morton of Birmingham; her sister-in-law, Eva Whitlock Smith of Birmingham; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Etta was a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church for over 40 years. Her church family was very important to her and she cherished those friendships and relationships. Her professional life was spent in retailing and merchandising. Etta had a gift for fashion, customer service, and management finishing a very successful career as a buyer and merchandise manager at the New Ideal in Birmingham. After retirement she pursued her avocation—gardening and flowers. She shared this love with friends from the Shades Crest Garden Club and others in the community. A special word of thanks to all those whose kindness and attention made it possible for her to live in Birmingham on her own until she was 93 and to her caregivers in Charlottesville who made her last years happy, safe, and comfortable. Funeral services will be held at Ridouts-Elmwood Chapel at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 31, 2015, with The Reverend Dr. James Auchmuty, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Youth Program at Shades Crest Baptist Church.
