Eugenia was born on June 8, 1933, in Fairfield, Alabama, the daughter of Hazel and Eugene Sims. She had two brothers and two sisters.
In 1950, Eugenia married her high school sweetheart, Lawrence Hand Sr. Lawrence and Eugenia built a full life together beginning in Minor, Alabama. Married for 68 years, they had three children, Lawrence Jr., Linda, and George. Their family grew into a large and loving one with eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Whether it was holidays, grandchildren sing-alongs, or a simple meal, time spent at Granny and Caw Caw’s house was special and irreplaceable.
After having her three children, Eugenia started to work for Vulcan Life Insurance Company. Eugenia worked hard and helped provide for her family for 30 years and eventually became the assistant to the President of the company. Eugenia was known for her cooking, particularly her spaghetti, and even more so for her sewing. She made her granddaughters many beautiful smocked dresses that they still have today. She was very strong in her faith and loved going to church and spending time with her family and friends. Stronger than her faith was her love for and from her husband, Lawrence Sr.
Eugenia faced many battles with her health, including overcoming breast cancer and more recently, Alzheimer’s Disease. Throughout it all was her husband. He took her to every appointment, held her hand, and never missed feeding her breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their love has and will always be an inspiration for anyone who was lucky enough to witness it.
Eugenia is survived by her husband, Lawrence Walton Hand, Sr., and their children, Lawrence Walton Hand, Jr., (Lynne) of Panama City Beach, Florida; Linda Hand Foster (David) of Birmingham, Alabama; George Lamar Hand (Joy) of Tupelo, Mississippi. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bradley Sims Foster; Claire Foster Martin (Bobby); Leah Hand Perry (Allen); Samuel Walton Hand (Jenni); Anna John Hand, Gracie Marie Hand; Chastity Lynne Blaylock; James Maxwell Blaylock, Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Ro, Davis, Georgia, Caleb and Alex.
A Funeral Service will be held at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at 1:00 pm with a visitation beginning at 11 am. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum.
The family would like to express their appreciation to all of Eugenia’s caregivers over the past 17 years.
