

She had celebrated her 100th birthday on June 16 of this year.
Marie was born in Thorsby, AL to Melvie Hayes Benson and George Monroe Benson, Sr. She was raised in Thorsby and graduated from Chilton County High School.
In the 1940’s Marie moved with her family to Fairfield, AL, where she worked in the Accounting Department at US Steel for 40 years. She was involved in many employee groups and especially enjoyed the company bowling team. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa business sorority.
After her retirement from US Steel, she worked for many years at Strain Properties in Birmingham.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Fairfield until it was sold and since that time has been a member of First Baptist Church of Birmingham. Marie was a gifted china painter and was a member of the Cullman China Painters Club.
She is survived and will be missed by her brother, George M. Benson, Jr, nephew, Jim Rutland (Denise), nieces Sharon Smith Higbee (Edd) and Joan Rutland Chamblee (Gary) and their families as well as many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, Mary Benson, her sisters, Shirley Smith and Lurline Rutland and her nephew Ronnie Smith.
There will be a Graveside Service on Thursday, October 8 at 2pm at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
In lieu of flowers, any memorials may be made to The Organ Fund at First Baptist Church of Birmingham.
