Ezra Mitchell Jr. was born July 21, 1934, in Dallas County, Alabama to the late Ezra Mitchell and Tina Williams. Upon finishing school in Dallas County, Ezra immediately began looking for a better life and moved to Mobile, AL where he married and had four children. Ezra started a job as a janitor at South Central Bell but determined to provide for his family he studied and passed several tests which enabled him to successfully become the first black cable repair technician in Mobile, Alabama. He was also a member of the Pioneers Retirement Club for South Central Bell. He retired after 33 years of service. He was blessed to enjoy his retirement for 22 years.
Ezra accepted Christ at a young age and united with Central Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama where he served faithfully as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Ezra Mitchell remained an active member of Central Baptist Church until his marriage in 2003 in Birmingham, Alabama to his lovely wife Irene Mitchell at Integrity Bible Church where he was a dedicated Deacon under the leadership of Pastor Broderick Hennington. Later, he joined New Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. James H. Brooks I., where he continued to be a faithful member by attending Wednesday noon bible study serving as a dedicated Deacon and assistant Sunday school teacher until his passing.
He loved his family and adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He taught us all how to love one another not just by words, but also in deed.
Ezra always had a calling to care for others especially children. He was very passionate about the last, the least, and the lost. He dedicated most of his time to encouraging, teaching, and ministering to youth at Strickland Youth Center in Mobile, AL as well as many other facilities throughout the Birmingham area. He provided numerous meals for families by giving generously to his Church’s Bread of Life Ministry. He also received several awards and recognitions including Pioneer for His People, Man of the Year and Job Steward.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra Mitchell and Tina Williams; two sisters, Lola Aaron and Azalea Mitchell.
Ezra Mitchell leaves behind to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Irene Mitchell; daughters: Evanda (Fred) Young of Mobile, Al., Donna (Wyley) Yarber of Loganville, Ga., Holly Mitchell of Mobile, Al., Annjerald DeVance of Birmingham, Al, and Lisa (Eddie) Clark of Birmingham, Al. sons: Phillip Mitchell of Mobile, Al., Bryan (Anita) Maryland of Mobile, Al., Michael (Tara) Poe of Birmingham, Al; 15 grandchildren: Daniel (Jaquita) Mitchell, Cameron Young, Chasity (Haamid) Azeez, Maurice Harris, Phillip (Larie) Mitchell, Alyssa (Terry) Moore, Erin Young, Rodney Stafford, Kevin Maryland, Bradley Maryland, Lee DeVance II, Alisha DeVance, April DeVance, Bria Poe, Michael Poe III; 16 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
