Floyd Mitchell McClung Jr.

Floyd Mitchell McClung, Jr., 97, of Birmingham, AL passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026 in Jacksonville, AL. A celebration of life will be held at John’s Ridout’s Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel & Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, AL on Thursday, May 14th at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 am.

Floyd was born in Phil Campbell, AL in 1928. He moved to Birmingham, AL in 1947 and began working at McGough Bakers where he met and married Jean Zicarelli McClung. Together, they raised six children. He was drafted and served in the US Army at Fort Lee, Virginia from 1952-1954 during the Korean War. In 1962, he started the first Pepperidge Farm franchise in the State of Alabama. In 1975, he sold his franchise and later went to work as a sales rep for Interstate Brands Corp (Merita Bread) until his retirement in 1994. In 1995, he married Wanda Gillespie McClung and moved to Fultondale, AL. There he enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He was an avid Auburn fan and loved attending Auburn football games. He also enjoyed traveling, attending gospel singings and watching Atlanta Braves baseball. In his later years, he moved to Jacksonville, AL, to live with his daughter. He became a member of Church of the Highlands and looked forward to seeing his friends each Sunday.

Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Gillespie McClung; his first wife, Jean Zicarelli McClung, mother of his children; his daughter, Elizabeth McBrayer, and stepson, David Veal.

He is survived by his children Tommy McClung, Peggy Palmer, Susan Hurst, Edward McClung, and Mitch McClung, grandchildren Amy Zeman (Mike), Julie McBrayer, Troy Studyvin, Meagan Studyvin, Stacey Hurst, and Stephen Hurst (Ashley), great-grandchildren Ella, Grace, and Kaylie Zeman, Colton and Olivia Studyvin, Jackson, Levi, and Kase Hurst. Stepsons Burt Veal and Cliff Veal (Connie), grandchildren Daniel, Esti, and Heidi.

Floyd was a faithful supporter of the Big Oak Ranch. In lieu of flowers, Floyd can be honored by donations to: Big Oak Ranch, 6000 Shelley Drive, Springville, AL 35146.
