Garther Baity, age 96, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Wednesday December 12, 2018. Garther Baity was born on February 24th 1922 to the late Garther Baity Sr. and Lillie Baity in Dallas County, AL. He confessed his faith in Christ as a young man and united with Bethel Road Baptist church in Plantersville, AL. Garther never hesitated to pray with family, friends, or perfect strangers at any time. Even in his last days he prayed for his doctors and shared the Gospel with them. In spite of attaining just a third grade education, Garther Baity achieved great things in his life. As a young man, Garther Baity served in the United States Army/Air Force during WWII. During the Civil Rights movement he participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches to oppose voter suppression laws. After his military service, Mr. Baity started his career with the Birmingham Water Works Board where he retired in 1987 after working over 40 years. Garther Baity was married to the late Mary L. Baity. They were together for over 40 years until the time of her passing in 2011. After his faith in God, his relationship with his wife, children, and family were most important to him. He leaves behind 4 children, 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and daughter. Some of his best memories were spending time with his family. One of his favorite events was the Family Day held annually in ‘the country’, on his family’s land in Plantersville. Outside of faith and family Garther Baity enjoyed playing dominoes and checkers. He helped found a Checkers & Dominoes Club where he served as president for many years. He even travelled to compete in tournaments with the Tuskegee Checkers and Dominoes club and contributed to the Birmingham team winning countless trophies. Some of his favorite things included: “Family Day” in Plantersville, watching the World Series, playing dominoes and checkers, leading prayer in his prayer group, eating cornbread and buttermilk, gardening, and watching westerns on TV. A visitation for Garther will be held Friday, December 14, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Johns-Ridout's Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave Sw, Birmingham, AL 35211. A funeral service will occur Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 11:00 AM, 800 Dennison Ave Sw, Birmingham, AL 35211. A burial will occur at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum, 600 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Birmingham, Alabama 35211.
