
Elder, Gladys Martin, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012. Born in Birmingham in 1915, Mrs. Elder spent her formative years in Wylam, Alabama. She attended Wylam Grammar School, Ensley High School, and UAB. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Eliza Chadbourne Martin; a sister, Emma Davis; a brother, Alfred Martin; and husband of 72 years, Fred Morris Elder. Mrs. Elder retired as an accountant from then Arthur Young and Co. after 25 years of service. She also worked at Piper Ice Cream Company. She volunteered with the Travelers Aid Society during World War II and received an award for 500 hours of service. Mrs. Elder served as a Sunday School teacher of young people at Martin Memorial United Methodist Church and as an adult Sunday School teacher at Bluff Park United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Shepherd’s Center. She loved and appreciated being around people. Mrs. Elder is survived by a caring family: her son, Marty (Joan); and grandsons, David (Reagan) and Scott. Visitation will be held at 2: 00 pm on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Elmwood Chapel followed by a celebration of Mrs. Elder’s life at 3:00 pm. Burial will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the food bank at Bluff Park United Methodist Church, 733 Valley Street, Hoover, AL 35226.
