Gordon S. Sorrell Jr., 81, died Friday, September 19 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Gordon was born on January 10, 1933 in Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from Woodlawn High School where he was active in athletics and student government. Gordon attended The University of the South, in Sewanee, TN., on an academic scholarship and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He was an All-American and an Academic All-American. While attending Sewanee, he was active in Student Government and a member of SAE Fraternity. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. Gordon was an entrepreneur and an avid tennis player. Gordon is preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Erma Sorrell, sister Joan Sorrell Walker, and grandson Matt Weeks. He is survived by daughters, Sharon Sorrell McMichael (Randy), Cindi Sorrell Weeks (Alan), Robert Sorrell (Robbin), grandchildren Christie McMichael Battle (Alex), Jason Weeks (Bess), Kyle Weeks (Greer), Ashley Sorrell, Stephanie Sorrell, Robert Sorrell, Jr. and three great grandchildren. There will be a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Rev. Joe Elmore, officiating. The family will receive friends and family at the home of Robert and Robbin Sorrell following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the National Parkinson's Foundation would be appreciated.
