Gwenda Haithcock Veras of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, died peacefully at her home on May 12. She was 74 years old.

Gwen was born February 1, 1951 in Franklin County, Alabama to J.W. and Marjorie (Scott) Haithcock. On June 16, 1976, she married Joseph N. Veras in Birmingham. Gwen and Joe lived in Vestavia Hills, Alabama for the past 35 years.

She was a graduate of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where she earned an accounting degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. Gwen’s early professional career included Southern Research and a long and successful employment with Baptist Health System. She served as Finance Director for the Jefferson County Department of Health until her retirement.

Gwen held a deep Christian faith throughout her life and was a long-time member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. She loved the outdoors including gardening and taking long early morning walks. She was a gifted and generous cook, enjoyed yoga, and spent many happy times at the Veras’ beach home in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Gwen was a naturally benevolent person. Her love, kindness and positive spirit marked the lives of all who knew her. Whether you were family, friend or co-worker, Gwen was always there offering her sincere help and care with whatever you needed. She touched the hearts of many and will be missed by all.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents J.W. and Marjorie Haithcock, sisters Marilyn Gail Cooper and Connie Vickery, and brother Joey Haithcock.

Gwen is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Joe, his son Marc (Casey) Veras and daughter Laura (David) Marran, niece Kelly (Larry) Cooper Rouse, nephews Casey (Alicia) Cooper and Jared Vickery, sisters-in-law Karen (Robert) Fitton and Andrea (Mark) Demel, brother-in-law Kevin Amundsen, grandchildren Tyler Veras, Nic (Brianna) Veras, Kathryn (David) Nolder, and Elizabeth (Alex) Petrie, as well as her great-grandchildren, great-nephews and great-nieces.
