He was born in Goodwater, Alabama on June 3, 1924. After graduating from Woodlawn High School, he proudly served his country in the Army Air Corp during WWII and also served in the Air Force Reserve 2589th Bomb Group in Birmingham. He retired from Southern Railroad after eleven years as a Locomotive Fireman, and he retired from Hayes International Corporation after 33 years as a Quality Assurance Aircraft Inspector. Jake had a private pilot’s license and loved to fly. He logged over 3,000 hours. Jake was also a prominent member of The East Lake Lions Club for nineteen years. He attended Central Baptist Church in Argo, Alabama.
Jake was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Ellen.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Jo Ellen Ives and her husband John; his son, Doug Jacobs and his wife Perri; Four Grandchildren, Dr. John M. Ives, Jr. and his wife Carmen; Jennifer Ives McCain and her husband Brent; Riley D. Jacobs and his wife Sarah; Jana Jacobs Broughton and her husband Tom; along with Nine Great-Grandchildren, Jake, Justin, Jeremy, and Joseph McCain; Elena Grace Ives; Thomas and Reese Broughton; and Mia and Stella Jacobs.
Jake was a fun loving, easy going man. A real cowboy at heart. He loved watching old western movies. He even decorated his home and farm with a western theme. Jake loved anything cowboy, hats, boots, and blankets. He loved to share stories of his work on airplanes at Hayes International. He would also share stories of working on the Railroad. Jake spent long hours shoveling coal on steam engines. He also raised Angus cattle on his farm in Argo, Alabama. His friends and family have fond memories of picnics at the farm and watching the trains. The farm was a place where time stood still. Jake enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at 1:30 pm with a visitation beginning at 1:00 pm. The committal service will take place at the funeral home due to impending weather.
