Helen Newsome

Helen Braswell Newsome, age 77, passed away Monday, September 21, 2020, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Linden, AL to John William and Sadie Schaffer Braswell on July 18, 1943. She grew up in Linden and graduated from Linden High School. She then moved to Birmingham and completed Alverson-Draughon Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper in Birmingham and married Michael (Mickey) Joseph Newsome in 1966.

Helen was a loving wife, devoted mother, and grandmother. She was a longtime member and faithful supporter of Huffman United Methodist Church where she enjoyed her involvement in the United Methodist Women and served as a Stephen Minister. Helen most recently regularly attended Asbury United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Naomi Women’s Circle.

She was artistic and enjoyed creating things with her hands. Helen was skilled at crafting, oil painting, cross-stitch, quilting, scrapbooking and sewing. She also enjoyed gardening, reading and her birthday club luncheons with friends.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents John and Sadie Braswell. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Michael (Mickey) Joseph Newsome of Birmingham, AL, daughters Stacey Wald of Marietta, GA (David) and Kelly Fredette of Kennesaw, GA (Brock), 3 grandchildren Sophia Marie Fredette, Michael Edward Fredette, and Emma Rose Wald, brothers William Braswell, George Braswell, Allen Braswell, and a sister June Vice.

Her funeral service will be held at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel on Friday, September 25th at 2 pm and visitation beginning one hour prior. Burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East in Trussville, AL.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Huffman United Methodist Church, Asbury United Methodist Church, or the Birmingham Lymphoma Society.
