Henry Harvey Lapidus, born June 16, 1935, in Birmingham, Alabama, passed away surrounded by love and family. He was born to Irving and Dora Lapidus and was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.
The great love of Henry's life was his wife, Leah Hanan Lapidus of 68 years. There has been no woman loved more deeply than Leah, and their bond was the foundation of Henry's life. Through Leah, Henry gained a second family who embraced him as their own, often referring to him as their son. He shared a wonderful relationship with Leah's siblings and family, including Lewis Hanan whom Henry fondly called "brother," and Lewis's wife (deceased), Sandra Hanan; Morris Hanan, Rachel Rabin; and Renee Plata.
Henry and Leah built a loving family together. He was a devoted father to Sheri Lurie (husband Charles Lurie), Ilene Broda deceased) husband David Broda, and Rubin Lapidus.
Henry was a proud and loving grandfather to five grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren: Adam Lurie (married to Mason) Erin Rowell (married to Carson; Ryan Broda; Jacob Lapidus; and Josh Lapidus (married to Ivey). Great grandchildren Taylor, Henry, Benji, Millie and Audrey to them he was honored to be called papa. All of his nieces and nephews help a special place in his heart.
Professionally, Henry was instrumental in the creation and success of a business empire. He played a key role in building Standard Distributors, a company known nationwide for its integrity, honesty, and ethical way of doing business. Henry was deeply respected and loved by both his customers and employees, many of whom became lifelong friends.
After leaving Standard Distributors, Henry continued his professional journey through involvement in real estate, including work with RealtySouth. Once again, his reputation for fairness, trustworthiness, and genuine care for people preceded him, allowing him to build lasting relationships with clients and colleagues.
Henry believed deeply in giving back. He was known for being exceptionally gracious with his time and service to others. He was a dedicated docent for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, where he proudly shared history and fostered understanding. Henry also volunteered his time at St. Vincent's Hospital and with Senior Readers with Red Mountain Theater, He was involved with CARES which his niece Lise is head of and cared for Alzheimer and Parkinson patients, quietly making a difference in countless lives through compassion, patience, and kindness.
Henry further served his community through his work on the zoning committee for the City of Mountain Brook in association with the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Alabama, Henry's devoted caregivers—Wanda Thomas, Chandra Jones, Michelle Riggs and Sandra Matthews and UAB Home Health. Linda Jones Nurse Practitioner and Dr. Pappas and the Vestavia Fire Dept. for their compassion, care, and support.
Henry Harvey Lapidus will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, his generosity of time, his love of family, his devotion to Leah, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His legacy lives on through the many people whose lives he touched and the family who loved him beyond measure.
