Born May 17, 1924, in Birmingham, Alabama, he was the son of the late Leon Thomas and Annie Estes Thomas. Because of his poor vision, he couldn’t formally serve in any branch of the military but when Pearl Harbor was attacked in December of 1941, he was one of the many civilians who worked feverishly to restore Hawaii Territory. After returning to Alabama, he married Vera Louise Bradshaw.
Herbert was a talented woodworker and made a living as a carpenter. He owned a cabinet shop until retiring. Hard work was a part of who Herbert was and what he loved. He loved being outdoors and spent most of his time working and tinkering at his barn. At any given time, he had many animals including cows, pigs, and chickens. However, his favorite was his goats.
He was a long-time member of Pawnee Baptist Church and took pleasure in listening to live gospel music. Herbert will be remembered for his generosity and compassionate spirit who always gave to others. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them.
Herbert is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Vera Thomas; and his parents.
Left to cherish his memory are his niece, Sandra Bradshaw Glenn and her husband, David; three great-nephews, Joshua Glenn and his wife, Rachel; Jacob Glenn and his girlfriend, Megan Miller; and Joseph Glenn; along with a great-great nephew arriving in February of 2019.
Funeral Services for Herbert will be at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel on Monday, November 5, 2018 beginning at 2:00 PM with a visitation from 1-2 PM. Burial will follow at Marvin’s Chapel Cemetery in Pinson, Alabama.
