After attending two years of college, James began a long and dedicated career as a foreman with U.S. Steel. His strong work ethic and leadership earned him the respect of his colleagues and friends. Beyond his professional life, James was deeply committed to his faith. He was a longtime member of Hueytown Methodist Church and later served as a devoted member and deacon at Gulf Shores Baptist Church.
James had a passion for life that extended far beyond his work and church. He loved playing golf, fishing, and hunting, and he traveled extensively, creating cherished memories along the way. His adventurous spirit and warm heart touched everyone who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Geraldine Cole; his first wife, Joyce Moore Cole; his second wife, Kathryn West Cole; and his brother, Harry Cole.
Left to honor his memory are his children, Richard Cole (Robin) and Lisa Johnson (Kent); grandchildren, Allison Cole, Wesley Cole, Cole Johnson, and Kelsey Barton; and great-grandchildren, Emma Cole, Ethan Cole, Kennedy Johnson, Harriet Johnson, Jacob Barton, Eva Joyce Barton, Luke Barton, and Samuel Barton. His legacy lives on in each of them.
