JANE ELIZABETH SCATES, age 88 of Remlap, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Bill Scates; and sisters, Pat Sanders and Elaine Hartley. She is survived by her daughter, Holly Rowlen (Jeff); son, Tony Scates; brother, Bill Starkey (Tracy); grandchildren, Daniel Rowlen (Lacey) and Joanna Rowlen; honorary grandchild, Holly Messer (Ryan) and daughter, Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews. Jane was born in Mt. Vernon, IL and grew up in southern Illinois. She attended Murray State College where she met and fell in love with Bill. They made their home in the Birmingham area and were members of Lee’s Chapel Methodist Church. After her children were grown, she went back to school and received an Associates Degree from Jeff State. She was proud of her degree and went to work for the Methodist Children’s Home. After Bill’s death, she found companionship with Johnny Harris until his death. Her family will celebrate her life with visitation on Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 1-2 at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel with her service beginning at 2:00. A private burial will take place at a later time.
