Age 92, of Birmingham, AL, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Pinson on Friday, September 25, 2020. She was born in Dothan on May 17, 1928, and grew up there. She married at age 18, and attended Howard College for two years – until she started her family. Mrs. Zbinden served as a pastor’s wife, and taught piano lessons for years. She then went back to school, earning her Registered Nurse degree from Jefferson State Community College while her three oldest daughters were also in college. She was a nurse at East End/Medical Center East until she retired in 1991. She is preceded in death by her husband of sixty one years, Dr. George Louis Zbinden; her grandson, Casey Russell; great-granddaughter, Nan Cochran, as well as her parents and brothers. She is survived by her six daughters: Anne Cassady, Sarah Coley (Glynward), Celia Griffin (Charlie), Beth Russell (Frank), Zolinda Cochran (Mike), and Gina Blankenship (Bill); her twelve grandchildren: Crisi (Jason), Brandy (Keith), Rand (Katrina), Sage (Jessica), Drew (Katie), Wes, Corey, Kerri, Tyne (Tim), Clay (Julie), Morgan (Jonathan), and Taylor; and her precious twenty-four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Zbinden served faithfully as a pastor’s wife, pianist, organist, and soloist, along with other ministries supporting her husband’s calling. Her ministry continued the last five years of her life when she moved to Kirkwood by the River, where she was affectionately known as Mrs. Z. She served others there through her music and the sharing of her large family with many of the residents. The family would like to express their appreciation to those who loved and cared for “Nana” in her last years with us here on earth. We look forward to seeing her again in heaven one day.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 29 at 10:00 A.M. with the Memorial Service following at 11:00 A.M, both at the First Baptist Church in Pinson. A family only graveside service will follow. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to: Nicaraguan Feeding Program c/o First Baptist Church Pinson, 4036 Spring Street, Pinson, AL 35126.
