

Jean Carol (Hauck) Rutledge, age 89, passed away peacefully in her home Sunday, November 5, 2017. She had been living at the Garden Plaza Senior Living community in Lawrenceville, GA since 2012 after moving there from Tallahassee, Florida to be closer to family. Mrs. Rutledge was a graduate of Western Hills High School in Cincinnati, OH, and of the University of Cincinnati in 1950. During her career at UC, she was Vice President of her senior class with a yearbook list of activities that describes how much she loved being at UC: “Senior Class Vice President, Chi Omega, Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, Mortar Board, Women’s Senate, W.Y.S.F., Wig Wag, Varsity Vanities, Tau Beta Sigma, University Band, Junior Prom Committee, W.A.A., Ivy Chain, Intramural Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Manager Intramural Basketball, V.I.C, Y.W.C.A, Senior Week Committee, Junior Advisor”. Mrs. Rutledge was married to Earl Vance Rutledge, Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama on “Armistice Day” 1953 – now known as Veteran’s Day - upon Mr. Rutledge’s return from Korea. The Rutledges moved to Miami, Florida in 1957 where they lived until retirement and moved to Tallahassee in 1989. Mrs. Rutledge devoted much of her life to raising 3 sons. Early on she was also active as a substitute elementary school teacher as well as teaching Sunday school. She loved music and passed that love along to her three sons, each of whom played an instrument and carry on the love of music today. The Rutledges retired to Tallahassee, making their home overlooking the fairway at Killearn Country Club, and attended Calvary Presbyterian and Wildwood Presbyterian churches in Tallahassee. Mr. Rutledge passed in 2003. Mrs. Rutledge loved being with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchild who calls her “Great Mama”. And she enjoyed her friends at Garden Plaza, as well as making new friends while acting as an ambassador to new residents in the facility. Mrs. Rutledge is survived by sons Vance (and wife Diane), William (Buddy), and Charles (and wife Jill), grandchildren Katherine Edmonson (and husband Matt), Michael, Courtney, and Earl, and great-grandchild Aubrey Kate. Services will be held Sunday November 12 in Birmingham, Alabama.
