

Jeanne Earle Gibbs went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, June 8, 2024. She was at home surrounded by family and friends. She was 98 years young. Mrs. Gibbs was born in Portsmouth, VA on October 13, 1925 to Floyd Wilkins and Thelma Cowell Wilkins. She and her mother moved to Norfolk, VA after the tragic death of her father when she was 3 years old. After graduating from Norview High School in 1943, Jeanne joined the US Cadet Nurse Corp. She said this was the most wonderful experience of her life to date. She gained a great career and was presented with an opportunity to meet her future husband. After graduating from nursing school at Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA, she went to work at the VA Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL. At the VA Hospital, she met the love of her life, Henry Beecher Gibbs, who was her patient. He was attending the University of Alabama on the GI bill. They married on October 16, 1947. This was the beginning of her 49-year marriage adventure with Henry. She loved being a wife and mother. She considered her friends as family too. She never met a stranger. She was funny, feisty, loving, gracious and a wonderful gardener. She loved sharing her peonies with everyone. She loved hard and forgave easy. While she has passed on from this earthly realm, she leaves a legacy of love.
Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Thelma Wilkins and her husband, Henry Gibbs, who passed in 1997 and a son, David Lee Gibbs, who passed away in 1959. She is survived by her son, Tom Gibbs (Bev), daughters Susan Bullard (Cecil), Jan Greer, and Cathy Crocker (Billy); grandchildren Alicia Alvarez (Joey), Ryan Bullard (Amy), Jeremy Bullard, Aaron Crocker (Nikki), Jacob Crocker (Lexus), and Rose Crocker; great-grandchildren Tyler Alvarez, Mia Alvarez, Lucas Alvarez, Sophie Bullard, Jordan Bullard, Hadassah Bullard, Sienna Bullard, Xander Crocker, Bodie Crocker and Ada Crocker; Nieces and Nephew Ann Epperson, Jane Gibbs, Jim Gibbs and Patty Walker.
Mrs. Gibbs’ services will be at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel at 1500 Gadsden Hwy in Birmingham, AL 35235. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2024. Saturday, June 15, 2024, visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Her funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Following the funeral service there will be a graveside service at Forest Hill Cemetery located at 431 60th Street N., Birmingham, AL 35212.
