

Joeann L. Sebert, lovingly known as "Mama Jo," passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama, at the age of 92. Born on September 5, 1933, in Birmingham, Alabama, she lived a long and fulfilling life rooted in love, family, and dedication.
Joeann was the cherished daughter of Charles Sutterer and Lenora Sutterer Wilson. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 34 years, Johnny Ray Sebert; her sisters Helen Elhart and Charlene Whittemier; and her great-granddaughter Hayleigh McKay Etheredge. Despite these losses, Joeann remained a steadfast source of strength and love for her family.
A hardworking woman with an indomitable spirit, Joeann worked tirelessly throughout her life, continuing to contribute even into her later years. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her devotion to her family. As the matriarch of the Sebert family, she was a guiding light who always showed love and care to those around her. Known for saving wisely and giving generously, she created a legacy of warmth and support that will be remembered for generations.
Joeann’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She is survived by her children: Bobbie Massengill (Mark), Dana Peoples (Kenny), Frank Sebert (Hayden), and John Sebert (Tina). Her grandchildren—Brandon Etheredge (Stacey), Matthew Etheredge (Kelli), Destiny Massengill, Brittany Sebert, Courtney Guthrie (Chad), Aaron Johnson, Taylor Long (Soly), Nick Long (Kelli), Kendra Peoples (Ross), Jake Long (Chyna), and Cheyenne Peoples, whom she loved dearly. She also leaves behind 18 great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her life, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and neighbors who were touched by her kindness.
Joeann had a zest for life that shone through in everything she did. She loved sewing and crafting with remarkable skill and creativity. A true artist at heart, she found joy in creating beautiful things with her hands. Fishing was another passion of hers—a pastime that brought peace and connection to nature. And no one could forget her love for Elvis Presley; his music brought a sparkle to her eyes and filled many happy moments.
Above all else, Joeann loved cooking for her family. Her kitchen was the heart of countless gatherings where laughter echoed and memories were made over delicious meals prepared with love. Her feisty spirit and unwavering devotion to those she held dear made every moment spent with her unforgettable.
Joeann’s legacy is one of love—love for family, friends, and life itself. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
