

John Edward Caraway Sr., 92 of Lake View, Alabama passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026. John was survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Dorothy; children, Wanda Stricklin and husband, Brian of Lake View, Alabama and Allison Collier and husband, Robert of Athens, Alabama; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, James Ellis Caraway and Edna Swain Caraway, and his sons, John Edward Caraway, Jr. and Randall Lynn Caraway; and his brothers and sister.
During his working career, he was a milkman for White Dairy and later became a draftsman and self-taught engineer. He was an expert on conveyor systems and did work for companies like US Steel and International Paper. He also designed part of the launch gantry structure at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. His hobby during much of his life was deer hunting. He joined hunting camps and eventually rented land to start one with a group of friends.
After retirement, he took up gardening and grew fresh fruits and vegetables. He kept that up until his body no longer allowed him to work outside.
There will be a family viewing at 10:15 am on August 25, 2026, at Johns-Ridout’s Mortuary – Elmwood Chapel followed by a processional at 10:50 am to the plot in Block 50 at Elmwood Cemetery. Friends are invited to join us at 10:30 am at Johns-Ridout’s located at 800 Dennison Ave. SW, Birmingham, AL 35211 for the processional to the graveside service.
