John Herbert McGinty (Herbie), 77, of Adamsville, Alabama passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020 after a battle with cancer. He died surrounded by loved ones. A graveside service will be held Friday, February 21st at 3 pm at Highland Memorial Gardens in Bessemer.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Henry McGinty, mother, Edna Lee (Egloff) McGinty, and two brothers, Joseph McGinty and Paul McGinty. He is survived by two sisters, Pat Lewis and Edna Tucker, his former wife Betty McGinty, two daughters, Connie Martin and her husband Pat, and Renee Brown and her husband Sam, one son, John McGinty Jr. and his wife Tammy, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many extended family and friends.
He was born October 7, 1942 in Anniston, Alabama. He grew up in Hillview and lived his adult life in Adamsville. In 1960 he entered military service with the Army Reserves and later went active duty in the US Air Force, working as an auto pilot system repairman. After his military service he began laying brick and became a very skilled brick mason. His talents can be seen in many of the buildings in Birmingham, including the BJCC, the Birmingham airport and many of the downtown skyscrapers. His favorite hobbies were golf, fishing, hunting and bowling. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and loved his family very much. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
