John was born to Mr. & Mrs. R.C. and Maud Turner in Vernon, AL. The family moved to Birmingham in 1942. Lived in the Acipco area where John attended Acipco Eagan Grammar School and later graduated from Phillips High School. He entered the U.S. Navy after school and was fortunate to travel the world with the Navy. He played basketball and softball for years and was a very good athlete. John retired from Beaver Construction Co. (Arlington Construction Co.) a few years ago where he advanced to vice-president.
John was a modest, quiet, and honest man who truly loved and took care of his fellow human beings.
John attended and sang in the choir of Acipco Methodist Church for many years before joining Irondale United Methodist Church.
John never married and had few relatives but many friends. He is survived by 3 cousins from Arkansas, Mark Speed, John Gregory Speed, and Drew Speed.
