June E. Krout (née Etheridge), aged 96, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama. Born on June 15, 1929, in Birmingham, she lived a long and fulfilling life rooted in love for her family, nature, and the written word.
June spent her career as a secretary and often reminisced fondly about her time working for Brice Building Company, Pizitz, and finally Southern Natural Gas. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her passion for the world around her. An avid reader, June devoured books of all kinds and shared this love of literature with her daughter Connie, who carried that passion into a career as a librarian. June’s appreciation for nature was equally profound; she found joy in the beauty of plants and flowers and cherished visits to the botanical gardens in Birmingham, along with trips to locations throughout the country with her husband Claude. At home in Homewood, she cultivated her own garden, which became a sanctuary filled with vibrant life. She loved all the beautiful plants and flowers along with any of the creatures that took their home in the yard.
Family was at the heart of everything June did. She was a devoted wife to Claude Krout until his passing and a loving mother to her only daughter Constance Marie Harper Shivers. She took great pride in caring for her grandchildren Tara Cecil and Stephen Shivers, always ready to nurse them back to health when they were young. Her legacy continues through her five great-grandchildren: Max, Lucas, and Oliver Cecil, and Carden and Maggie Shivers.
June is survived by her younger sister Stephanie; two grandchildren, Tara Cecil and Stephen Shivers; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Katie Constance Lucas and Elijah Stephen Etheridge; her sister Nancy Harriman; Floyd W Harper (Billy) and her husband Claude Krout; and her daughter Connie.
June’s life was defined by kindness, curiosity, and an enduring love for those around her. Whether tending to her garden or sharing stories with loved ones over books or nature walks, she left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. May the memory of June E. Krout bring comfort to all who cherished her presence. A Visitation will be held on March 19, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Elmwood Chapel 800 Dennison Ave SW
