On Monday, January18, 2021, Dad, (Bill) Kernel Roosevelt Brasher, Jr., loving husband, and father, slipped peacefully away into the Arms of God at the age of 88. Kernal was born on February 25th, 1932, in Birmingham, AL, to the proud parents, Kernal and Belle Brasher.
Kernal was in the military serving in the following capacities: He served in the Korean War, on the aircraft carrier, USS Essex and received the following medals: National Defense Service Medal and the China Service Medal. He also served in the Army National Guard and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer – CW4 - with the U. S. Army. He also served as a chaplain during Desert Storm.
Kernal met the love of his life, Eleanor, through her two brothers who were also serving in the U.S. Army. On November 30th, 1956, Eleanor Ann Hipp and Kernal were married. Eleanor states that she fell in love with Dad at first sight. In addition, Dad also asked her to marry him the first week they met. After 64 years of marriage on November 30th, 2020, it is understandable that Dad would take his wallet out, whenever out in public, proudly displaying Mom’s picture stating, “look at my beautiful bride.”
Kernal and Eleanor raised two children, Karen, and David. There are no words that could ever express the abounding and unconditional love within their home. Kernels’ demonstration of love overflowed to his beautiful bride Eleanor, and his children. In addition, he was very comical and a huge cut up. He loved to laugh and makes others laugh. When at home with his family, or at any extended family gatherings, he kept everyone in “stitches.” Dad loved the Lord and loved serving Him faithfully. His favorite scripture was Galatians 2:20 – simply paraphrased “He Lives.” Dad enjoyed praising God with his voice in song. Early in their marriage, Dad sang in a gospel quartet “The Laymen” - and even recorded an album. Dad served God faithfully at 50th Street Baptist Church – singing in the choir and as a deacon. He also faithfully served at Roebuck Park Baptist church. In addition, he also served in the capacity of Minister of Music/Youth at Central Baptist Church, Gardendale, AL.
Kernal had several hobbies, which included, coin collecting, music, singing, and cars. Additionally, he was an avid Alabama football fan, and loved watching the sport. He collected many Alabama memorabilia over the years.
Kernal was preceded in death by his father, Kernal R. Brasher, Sr., his mother, Etta Belle O’Quinn Brasher, and his sisters, Bettye Louise Brasher Bosworth, and Alta Marie Brasher Ulmer. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, and his two children, Karen Ann Brasher Romeo and David Phillip Brasher. Other survivors include his brother Joe Lee Brasher, and his three grandchildren: Jason Anthony Brasher (Jess), Jonathan David Brasher (Meredith) and Stephanie Ann Romeo. Kernal also had three great grandchildren: Luke David, Kailee, and Emily. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
