York to Herman and Hortense Meisel. Lila grew up in New York and after college,
met the love of her life, Bernard (Bernie) Barton, on a blind date and the rest is
truly as they say history. Bernie and Lila lived in New York after they were married
and had a son Michael. Shortly after, they moved to Mansfield Ohio and had 2
daughters, Ruth and Beth. Lila was a school teacher for many years before opening
a gourmet kitchen store, Something Different. Lila and Bernie moved to California
after retiring but she continued to work part time to keep herself busy. After many
years, they moved to South Carolina and finally to Alabama in 2006. Bernie and
Lila moved to Fair Haven retirement facility in Birmingham in 2018 and Lila said
she wanted to learn everyone’s name that lived there. She not only learned
everyone’s name, she was an ambassador for Fair Haven for new residents moving
in and she loved sharing her happiness for living there with new residents. Lila and
Bernie loved to travel and cruise as well as play bridge. Lila was an avid knitter
and loved making baby sweaters for her friend’s grandchildren. Lila always had a
smile on her face and never met a stranger. Lila is preceded in death by her parents,
Herman and Hortense, her husband of 67 years Bernie, her brother Robert Meisel
and daughter in law Loretta Graves-Barton. She is survived by her children
Michael Barton (David) of Adelaide Australia, Ruth Graves-Barton of Seattle, WA,
and Beth Arnett (Alan) of Birmingham Alabama, numerous nieces and nephews
and many wonderful friends. No services will be held at this time. In lieu of
flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutstrussvillechapel.com for the Barton family.
