Linda Lou Broach

Linda Lou Broach, born October 18, 1939, in Gadsden, Alabama, passed away on August 6, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of education, service, friendship, and a lifelong appreciation for the beauty of the world around her.

Linda was the beloved daughter of Norman Linton Broach and Pauline Case Broach. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Norma Case Broach.

She is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephew, Amanda Graham Brown (Pryor), Linton Powell Graham, and Polly Lynn Saddler (Walt); many great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and a treasured circle of close friends who loved Linda not simply as a friend, but as family. She also leaves behind her faithful companion, Lily, her loving cat of 16 years, who brought her tremendous joy and companionship.

Education was more than Linda's profession—it was one of the great callings of her life. After 32 years devoted to teaching and inspiring young minds, she retired as a science teacher in June 1994. Throughout her distinguished career, she taught at John S. Jones Elementary School, Anna Stuart Dupuy Elementary School, and Mountain Brook Junior High School. Generations of students benefited from her knowledge, curiosity, dedication, and enthusiasm for science.

A lifelong learner herself, Linda earned an A.B. in Psychology with a minor in Biology from the University of Montevallo, a Master of Arts in Teaching in Science Education from Birmingham-Southern College, and an Education Specialist degree in Secondary Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Linda's commitment to education extended far beyond the classroom. A member of the Alabama Education Association since 1962, she served the organization in numerous capacities throughout the years. She was also a member of the Alabama Science Teachers Association and the National Science Teachers Association, reflecting her lifelong dedication to her profession and the advancement of science education.

Her heart for service was equally evident in her church and community. A longtime member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, Linda generously shared her time and talents as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and creator of bulletin boards for the elementary ministry. Whether she was teaching a science lesson in a classroom or sharing her gifts with children at church, Linda had a special way of making learning engaging and meaningful.

Linda also believed deeply in being an active part of the community she called home. She served as President of the Crestline Neighborhood and as President of the Crestline and Eastwood Community, generously giving her time and leadership to the people and places around her.

Some of Linda's happiest moments could be found among the things in nature she loved so dearly. She volunteered with the Birmingham Zoo, where her affection for animals brought her great fulfillment. Her love for flowers and plants drew her often to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and could also be seen in the beauty she cultivated in her own yard. She found wonder in living things—whether an animal at the zoo, a flower in bloom, or a young student discovering something new for the very first time.

Linda lived a life of purpose. She taught, she served, she nurtured, and she gave. Her influence can be found in the students she educated, the organizations she strengthened, the church and communities she served, the friendships she treasured, and the family she loved.

Those who knew Linda will remember an intelligent and accomplished educator, a devoted servant of her community, a lover of animals and nature, and a loyal and treasured friend. Her classroom may have closed many years ago, but the lessons of a life so generously lived will continue through all those fortunate enough to have known and loved her.

A graveside service honoring the life of Linda Lou Broach will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden, Alabama. Family and friends are invited to gather together as Linda is laid to rest and her remarkable life of service, education, friendship, and love is remembered and celebrated.
