She was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 22, 1925 to Howard Williams Coleman and Janet Cowling Coleman. She moved to Birmingham, Alabama where she grew up and attended Ramsey High School. She went on to graduate from the University of Alabama and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She belonged to bridge and garden clubs where she enjoyed close relationships with lifelong, loyal friends. Peggy was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and active in the special needs Sunday school class and church at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church through her special needs son, Edward Holcomb. She was active in the Jefferson County Association of Retarded Citizens and ArcWay Industries of Jefferson County. Peggy was also involved in real estate sales and collecting and selling antiques.
Peggy is survived by three of her four sons. Her oldest, Maurice Clifford Holcomb III (Robin), preceded her in death. She is survived by Howard Coleman Holcomb (Randi), Edward Cowling Holcomb and David Auld Holcomb. Grandchildren include: Christopher Ward Holcomb, Derek Coleman Holcomb, Rachel Marie Holcomb, Melissa Holcomb Vinson (Brent), Kelley Elon Holcomb and James Leo Tomczak; as well as great grandchildren Paul Carvel Vinson and Sophie Ann Tomczak.
Peggy was a loving mother to not only her four sons, but also to many close friends, struggling musicians and wayward teens, to whom she opened her house and heart as a source of refuge and strength. She was affectionally known as “Miss Peggy” by all of her extended family and friends whom she loved so dearly. Many a meal, overnight lodging, patience and wise counsel were provided by her without hesitation! To her grandchildren, she was their “Meemaw, and she took great delight in visiting with them.
Whether she was Mom, Meemaw, Peggy or Miss Peggy, she will be greatly missed by all of us. However, we all have no doubt that she already has a light on for a troubled soul that needs comfort!
A memorial service will be planned at a future date. The family requests that memorial donations be made to:
