She was born on March 14, 1925 in Decatur, Alabama to Luther Taylor Roper and Maizie Underwood Roper. An only child, Peggy was an exceptional student, achieving several scholarship awards in the Birmingham school system, graduating from Woodlawn High School. She attended Howard College, where she met the love of her life, Howard Sisson. They were married on May 27, 1945, while Howard was a Naval officer, and after the war they settled in Birmingham to raise their family.
Peggy was an avid reader her entire life, and an excellent lifelong bridge player, as well as a fan of most all sports, particularly baseball, golf and football. Peggy also loved to play golf and to sew. They were longtime members of Bluff Park United Methodist Church, which was a source of many long-term friends. When in the late 1970s they relocated to Dunwoody, Georgia, they opened their home to foreign exchange students and made new friends in the Atlanta area, until Howard’s retirement, at which time they returned to Birmingham. Peggy’s and Howard’s marriage lasted a remarkable seventy-two years until Howard’s death in 2017.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Howard Sisson. Cherishing the memories of her wonderful life are her three children and spouses: Anne Smith (Hon. Robert H.) of Mobile, Jane Seigel (Lester) of Mountain Brook, AL, and William Howard “Bill” Sisson (Mary Jane) of Mobile, AL; her eight grandchildren Amy Dillard (Clint) of Hoover, AL, Kerry McInerney (Jenny) of Mountain Brook, AL; Margaret Ann Smith of Mobile, Mary Katherine Nichols (Claude) of Birmingham, Claire Smith Taylor (Mikell) of Mobile, Daniel Seigel (Jessie Mayne) of Birmingham, Julia Maitre (Dr. Ship) of Mobile, William Taylor Sisson (Mandy) of Madison MS, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Peggy Sisson lived a wonderful life filled with kindness, honor and much love. She always encouraged her children, grand- and great-grandchildren to their very best in all aspects of life, especially in academics. She doted on her family and her family returned that love. Peggy will be greatly missed by her family and friends throughout Alabama.
Her graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 20, 2021 at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, Bluff Park United Methodist Church and Birmingham-Southern College.
