Margaret Osborne Stokes of Birmingham, passed from this life on May 8, 2018, just prior to her 96th birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Osborne, seven siblings, and her husband, Richard Stokes. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Sara Stokes Smith and Y. Margaret Banai; her grandchildren, Brian Gregory Smith (Vanessa), Christopher Allen Smith (Debbie), Tracy Denise Smith Campbell (Alex), and Richard Jonathan Banai (Rochelle); and great grandchildren Allison Smith (Nikki), and Elise Catherine Banai. Mrs. Stokes was a dietitian for the Birmingham Public School system for 20 years where she opened the then new Banks High School lunchroom in the early 60's. Additionally, Mrs. Stokes served as the President of the Alabama School Food Service Association as well as President of the National School Food Service Association. Subsequently, Mrs. Stokes worked for Robert Orr Sysco in Birmingham until retirement, and was named the Sysco Woman of the Year in 1983. Mrs. Stokes was a member of Ensley Highlands United Methodist Church, and in her later years, Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home on Friday, May 11, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. with a Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to the National Kidney Foundation, www.kidney.org.
