

Mrs. Marjorie Lynch Sherman Hammett, 101, went home to be with her Savior on December 19, 2022. Mrs. Hammet was born in Weir, Mississippi on October 23, 1921, to William and Lucie Weeks Lynch. She was one of 6 children. She married Max Sherman in 1939 and they were married until his death in 1980. She later married Jim Hammet and they were married until his death in 2011.
Mrs. Hammett was a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church for over 50 years. Over her lifetime, she nurtured and taught many children as a kindergarten teacher and director at Green Valley Baptist Church. For more than 10 years she was with Prime Time Treasures and School Bell Closet of the Assistants League of Birmingham.
Mrs. Hammett was preceded in death by her parents, William Lynch and Lucie Weeks Lynch; husbands, Max Sherman and Jim Hammett, and son in-law, Buster Norris. She is survived by her children: Richard Sherman (Darla), Birmingham, AL, Suzanne Norris (Buster), Birmingham, AL, and Karen Nelson (Michael), Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren: Rance Norris (Jennifer), Michele Bartow (Joel), Barry Norris (Meredith), Steve Norris (Susan), Rick Sherman (Terri), Victoria Nelson, and Max Nelson; 13 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation for Mrs. Hammett on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 from 1pm until 2 pm; followed by a celebration of life service in the Chapel at Johns Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel. Burial will follow at Birmingham’s historic Elmwood Cemetery in Block 38.
