

MASON, SUE M., age 99 of Birmingham, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014. She was born and raised on Alta Avenue in Little Five Points in Atlanta, GA. She attended Bass Elementary and High School and then Atlanta Southern Business College where she learned shorthand and typing. She learned to sew from a Singer sewing machine salesman that rented a room from her mother. She worked as a legal secretary and then for the War Department in Atlanta to aid in logistics and to build the soldiers war camp during WWII. She married Albert Dee Mason, Sr. of Stone Mountain, GA on Sunday, November 8, 1936 at The First Christian Church of Atlanta, had her first child, Albert Dee Mason, Jr. and then moved to Birmingham for Mr. Mason to work for Liberty Motors/Chrysler Corporation. Then she had a girl, Elizabeth Ann Mason. She then stayed home to raise her children and began her second love of sewing and making doll clothes as a part time job. She went to work as a church secretary for 76th Street Presbyterian Church and Rev. John Troxler. She then went to work as a legal secretary for Arthur Weeks and Harold Knight, at the same time she became more and more involved with working with dolls, learned to do doll repair, and formed her own company, Sue’s Dolls. She was one of the founding members of the Love of Dolls Club, acted as secretary, treasurer, with her “mighty Pringles bank” and President for many years. She continued until recently to attend the meetings. She also had many pets she loved including a cat named Munchin and dogs, Bell, Princess and Cupcake. She had two grandsons, Adam Mason Hydrick (Valerie) and Alex Martin Hydrick (Elizabeth); four great-grandsons, Michael, Brennan, Sutton and Vice. Friends are welcome to come by Ridout’s Trussville Chapel Friday afternoon for an informal visitation. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Forest Crest Cemetery beginning at 12 Noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made the Birmingham Humane Society.
