Martha Jo Thomason Richey, of Hoover, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, at the remarkable age of 99. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, creativity, and devotion to family that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Born on January 15, 1927, to the late Irby Read Thomason, Sr. and Bonnie Eula Gertrude Vines Thomason, Martha grew up during a time that shaped her strong character, resilient spirit, and deep appreciation for family and community. She graduated from Fairfield High School as a member of the Class of 1944.
On November 15, 1946, she married the love of her life, Melvin S. Richey, Jr. Together they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and enduring commitment. Their marriage lasted 56 years until Melvin’s passing in 2003, a testament to the love and devotion they shared.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; her parents; her beloved grandson, Evan Richey; her brothers, David Thomason and Irby Thomason; and her sister, Catherine Thomason Palmer.
A devoted homemaker, Martha’s greatest joy was caring for those she loved. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, and welcome. She possessed a generous heart and was happiest when helping others, often placing the needs of family and friends before her own. Whether offering encouragement, lending a helping hand, or simply providing a listening ear, Martha gave freely of herself and touched countless lives through her kindness.
Blessed with many creative talents, Martha enjoyed sewing, painting, wallpapering, and upholstery work. She approached every project with patience, skill, and determination. Resourceful and independent, she even prepared her own taxes and often assisted others with theirs. Her creativity was matched only by her willingness to share her gifts with those around her.
Those who knew Martha will remember her Christian faith, her quick wit, her gentle humor, and her unwavering compassion. She had a unique ability to make others feel valued and loved. Her presence brought comfort, her laughter brought joy, and her example taught lessons of grace, humility, and service.
While her family mourns her passing, they take comfort in the countless memories she created and the love she shared throughout her nearly century-long life. The values she lived by and the lives she touched will continue to be felt for generations to come.
Martha is survived by her loving children, Janice (Ed) Snow, Steve (Becky) Richey, and Mark (Tina) Richey; her grandchildren, Sascha Richey, Megan (Mike Kilgore) Snow, and Brian (Melissa) Richey; her great-grandchildren, Oliver Richey, Taylor Snow-Hall, and Alexis Kilgore; her great-great-grandsons, Dakotah Sexton and Ky’Zar Williams; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
A visitation will be held at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., with funeral services beginning at 2:00 p.m. Martha will be laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum.
Though her earthly journey has ended, the love she gave, the faith she lived, and the family she cherished remain as her enduring legacy.
